Flying is the most used mode of transportation during the busy travel period. Realizing the coming holiday season is when most of us will seek to maintain a continuous connection with friends, family... and the web, Google announced its holiday gift to America, free Wi-Fi service at many of the U.S. airports. In conjunction with Boingo Wireless, Advanced Wireless Group, Airport Marketing Income and other companies, Google will be providing free Wi-Fi services at airports across United States from now through January 15, 2010.
Many believe this may be a prelude to a forthcoming new Google service; however, this is the first of their holiday gifts to their users. The free Wi-Fi service initially began as a promotion they were doing with Virgin Airlines. Google announced that we're working with Virgin America to give free Wi-Fi service to all passengers on Virgin flights this holiday season and later decided to expand the promotion. The goal is to offer free Wi-Fi at all the airports across the country.
As of this writing, Google's holiday gift of free Wi-Fi is available only at 47 airports, including Las Vegas, San Jose, Boston, Baltimore, Burbank, Houston, Indianapolis, Seattle, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, St. Louis and Charlotte. It's nice to see a company giving something back to its customers, especially when it is a useful gift. But free Wi-Fi is not the end of Google's holiday benevolence. They also give you the option to give back and participate in their gift giving revelry. They give you the opportunity to make someone else happy also. When you log in to one of the free holiday Wi-Fi networks, you'll have the option to donate to one of three charitable organizations Google is sponsoring this holiday season; Engineers without Borders, the One Economy Corporation or the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.
And that is not all; Google will match the donations made by those you who participate across all the free holiday Wi-Fi networks up to $250,000. And as if that was not enough, finally, Google will award the airport network which generates the highest amount of donations per passenger, through January 1, 2010, $15,000 to donate to the local nonprofit organization of their choice. Now that is what I call a gift. Right on Google!
